There were not many dry eyes during the Christmas special of Downton Abbey (2012) when Matthew Crawley was sensationally and un-expectantly, killed off. Played by actor Dan Stevens, Matthew had been a major part of the award-winning programme and his death caused uproar within the fans.

Downton Abbey was Steven’s breakthrough role in 2010. Before that, he had performed on stage in productions such as As You Like It (2004) and Hay Fever (2006) co-starring Judi Dench. His TV career started with The Line of Beauty (2006) co-starring Hayley Atwell.

Stevens’ departure from Downton Abbey was shocking to most as he left when the programme was at its peak of popularity. He went onto transform his image into a Hollywood bad boy in the critically acclaimed independent film The Guest (2014). He also starred in another crime thriller A Walk Among Tombstones (2014) co-starring Liam Neeson.

Stevens is one to watch in Hollywood in the next year. His upcoming roles include The Cobbler (2014) co-starring Adam Sandler and Dustin Hoffman and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014) co-starring an ensemble cast including Robin Williams in one of his last film roles before his death.
