What do you get when you combine a post-apocalyptic sci-fi scenario with former Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte? That would be The Last Man on Earth, which premiered on FOX on March 1, 2015. The show originated from the writing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who had the idea initially for a feature film. They approached longtime collaborator Will Forte with the premise, who “took a spark to it and took it in his own direction.”
The show centers on Phil Miller, an ordinary guy who has, for reasons yet unknown, survived a “virus” that wiped out everyone — or so he and we thought until the end of the first of the two back-to-back episodes Fox used to launch the series.
We pick up on Phil already two years after the “virus” and he is fully entrenched in survivor mode, losing all sense of civilization and putting Tom Hanks’ Castaway character to shame with his vast number of “friends,” a motley crew of basketballs, volleyballs, soccer balls, beach balls, footballs, and pink pong balls.
The show is quite funny and Forte’s Phil is surprisingly relatable, in all his flawed grossness; the guy relieves himself in a swimming pool and swims in a blow up “margarita pool,” which, as it sounds, is a pool filled with margarita.
The Last Man on Earth will air on FOX Sundays at 9:30/8:30C
The premiere episode can be viewed on Hulu.
