Do you ever find yourself watching a show like American Idol and think; “How did they put him/her through to the next round? What are these judges thinking? I wonder what I would do if I were a judge…” Well, you no longer have to wonder. Thanks to ABC’s new reality singing competition, Rising Star, the traditional televised vocal competition has been reinvented, and viewers now have the final say. By downloading the free Rising Star App, viewers can vote either “YES” or “NO” during the performance and the vote is counted in real-time. The new reality show airs every Sunday at 9pm, with host Josh Groban and celebrity panelists; Brad Paisley, Kesha and Ludacris. The show follows this seasons group of aspiring singers as they audition live in front of a panel of judges, a studio audience and viewers across America.
The show is based on the Isreali singing competition, HaKokhav HaBa (meaning “The Next Star”) created by Keshet Broadcasting Ltd. Rising Star is from Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International (KI), and DC Media. The singing competition for ABC will mark the company’s first foray into the market since its formation in October. Ken Warwick (American Idol) and Nicolle Yaron (The Voice) are executive producing.
Each performance begins with the contestant singing behind a screen (“The Wall”).In order to move on, the contestant must reach 70% of “Yes” votes. Alongside the viewers vote, the three panelists are given 7% of the vote each, which can be added in for the contestant if they choose. The performers can also see how the voting went, so feedback is as immediate as the voting. Throughout the season, competitors will be eliminated if they fail to raise the wall, until the final stage of the competition, wherein four singers will compete to win the title of “The Next Rising Star” and a recording contract with Capitol Records.
This is the viewers chance to download the App and help the esteemed panel find the next “Rising Star” !
