The scandalous book that has gained international attention, Fifty Shades of Grey, will be making the leap over to the silver screen. Set in Seattle, Washington this is the first installment in E.L James’ trilogy that focuses on the relationship between a naïve college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business tycoon, Christian Grey. The novel has gained notoriety for its explicit scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism. Shades of Grey has topped many best-seller lists in the United Kingdom and United States, and the series has sold 31 million copies worldwide, with book rights sold in 37 countries. Perhaps most notably, Fifty Shades of Grey set the record as the fastest-selling paperback of all time in the UK, even surpassing the Harry Potter series!
The film is currently in development at Universal Pictures. The Social Network producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti have signed on to produce the film, after having been hand-picked by E. L. James, who will anchor the film’s creative process. Not many detail have been confirmed as of yet, but Kristen Stewart, Lyndsy Fonseca, Mila Kunis, Minka Kelly, Emma Watson, Ashley Greene, Lucy Hale, Elizabeth Olsen and Nina Dobrev have all been considered to fill the leading role of Anastasia Steele. Additionally, Robert Pattinson, Jessie Pavelka, Ian Somerhalder, Colin Egglesfield and Alexander Skarsgard have been considered for the role of the handsome Christian Grey.
