Steven Ellison, better known by his stage name Flying Lotus is the prodigious Los Angeles producer known for his dynamic experimental jazz influenced beats. The artist has released five albums and six EPs since 2006, not to mention releasing a visual album as a rapper under the moniker Captain Murphy. He is the nephew of famous jazz pianist Alice Coltrane (and her husband John Coltrane) who he cites as a major influence on his style and sound. Though he himself is signed to Warp Records, he also has his own label Brainfeeder which houses Thundercat, Daedelus, Mr. Oizo, and more. In more recent years, Flying Lotus has also produced a number of tracks for various rappers.

Flying Lotus’ latest album You’re Dead! was released October 7th, and features guests such as Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, and Herbie Hancock. You’re Dead! is arguably Flying Lotus’ most experimental album yet, as it jumps back and forth between chaotic jazz sequences of racing drums, bass, and keyboards and relaxed, flowing dream-like sequences of light keyboards, airy vocals, and almost extraterrestrial droning synths. All album artwork, including the cover and an image for every track was contributed by Japanese guro manga artist Shintaro Kago. Ellison commented on the album in terms of its title, “it’s the one experience we have in common. I wanted to make something that captures death from different angles—from the sad moments, to the confusing moments, to maybe even the blissful and silly ones.”
