Tory Lanez is a 22-year-old rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer from Toronto Canada, who has been creating some pretty big waves as of late, but is no rookie in the game. Lanez claims that he has been rapping since he was nine years old but did not break into the music industry until he was 17 when he signed with Sean Kingston’s label, Time Is Money Entertainment.
In 2010 Lanez dropped a project called “Playing For Keeps” and challenged fellow Canadian rapper Drake to listen to it. If Drake didn’t like what he heard the 17-year-old Tory Lanez was prepared to give him 10k for his time! Pretty bold statement from a kid that was just dropping his first real project.
About 5 years later Lanez is still putting out eye opening projects that fuse the sounds of R&B and Rap. Lanez is no longer signed to an official label, but despite his independence Tory has managed to land collaborations with some of today’s hottest rappers and producers like Meek Mill, French Montana, Soulja Boy, Dj Mustard, and many more.
Recently Tory has been working with producers from the electronic dance genre to create new sounds that he describes as “Swavey”. Tory says, “all Swavey means is taking from the culture, whatever it be—whether it be music or different genres—and being talented enough to fuse these genres together.” Lanez says that a lot of the new rappers can be described as Swavey because it really just means being multi dimensional and doing things a little less traditional. This approach has landed Tory with collaborations with RL Grime and Snakhips, two names that EDM fans are very familiar with.
The music industry has clearly noticed his talent but may not know how to sell it just yet, so Lanez stays connected to the big dogs through his song writng. Lanez has written songs for Akon, T.I., August Alsina, and Travis Scott and has undoubtedly influenced many more. Tory’s gritty street lyrics matched with a soft voice and catchy R&B melody’s attract a wide audience. Tory has done a great job of giving his fans a good dosage of content throughout the years in the forms of mix tapes and videos. We look forward to seeing how far the Lanez train goes!
