Be sure to keep your ear out for the delicate voiced Jhene Aiko this year. The dedicated singer/songwriter has been writing music everyday since she was a child. She has collaborated with big name artists like Drake, Frank Ocean, Schoolboy Q and the list continues to grow. Aiko recently released an album titled Sail Out which received incredibly positive reviews.
The beautiful, California original put out a mix-tape in 2011 titled Sailing Souls though her most recent EP, Sail Out was Aiko’s first release with the world watching. The EP debuted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart and 34,000 copies were sold with-in the first-week. The album featured guest appearances from Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Vince Staples.
She was discovered by the public eye after appearing on Drake’s track “From Time.” A true honor as Alicia Keys, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna are the only women to have appeared on any of his albums. She also opened for Drake’s “Would you like a tour?” tour. Aiko has an incredibly unique emotionless style. She sings with a medicated distance, never getting too up or down even when she sings songs of despair.
Jhene has already accomplished so much in her career. She made the cover of Complex magazine (April/May issue) and was also featured on Big Sean’s song “Beware” in 2013 which ended up reaching US Billboard Hot 100. Aiko also recently appeared on Saturday Night Live with Drake, where they performed their duet”From Time.”
Last week she released a track for her 26th birthday, a soothing tune called “My Afternoon Dream.” She has also put out an accompanying video of her during her trip to Maui, which she and her friend shot and edited themselves.
Aiko announced her debut studio album Souled Out would be released in May 2014. Additional music videos from her album Sail out are going to be put out soon, prior to the release of her new album. A single from her new upcoming album is also scheduled to arrive soon as well. Aiko has no plans of slowing down and continues to collaborate with talented artists.
